racism and tribalism is evil

Why is it that the same people who cry about racism abroad return home to practice tribalism against their neighbors? Isn’t it the same sin in a different skin?

Racism and tribalism are often spoken of as if they are different issues, but in reality, they are two faces of the same evil. Racism and tribalism are not new words to anyone. Sadly, they are sins many people commit daily without even realizing how serious they are before God. At their core, racism and tribalism are the same thing—Both involve negative preferential treatment—rejecting, sidelining, or mistreating someone simply because of their race, tribe, color, or ethnicity. Many Africans condemn racism when they travel to the Western world, yet return home to despise those from other tribes. Likewise, those who cry against tribalism at home often fail to see their own racial prejudice abroad. But before God, racism and tribalism carry the same weight of sin.

1. Every Human Bears God’s Image

Genesis 1:27 (GNB): “So God created human beings, making them to be like Himself. He created them male and female.”

From the beginning, God created humanity in His own image—black, white, brown, tall, short, male, female—all carrying His divine imprint. To discriminate against someone because of their color or ethnicity is to indirectly accuse God:

  • “Why did You make this person like this?”

  • “God, You didn’t create this person well.”

But Isaiah 45:9 (NLT) warns: “What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it?”

We are all clay in God’s hands. When you despise a person because of their race or tribe, you are fighting against the very handiwork of God.

2. We All Came from One Source

Acts 17:26 reminds us: “From one human being He created all races on earth and made them live throughout the whole earth.”

Every human being traces back to Adam and Eve. Different looks, cultures, and languages exist because God, in His wisdom, chose to diversify His creation. Just as children in the same family don’t all look alike, humanity doesn’t all look alike either. But difference does not mean inferiority. To discriminate on the basis of race or tribe is to reject your own brother or sister.

3. God Shows No Partiality

Acts 10:34–35 (GNB): “Peter began to speak: ‘I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis. Those who worship him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to.’”

Racism and tribalism are not new—they existed even in Bible times. The Jews saw themselves as God’s chosen people and often treated Gentiles (non-Jews) as unclean and unworthy of God’s covenant. This wall of division was so strong that Jews would not even eat with Gentiles.

It was in this climate that God gave Peter a vision that changed history. Acts 10:34–35 (GNB) says: “Peter began to speak: ‘I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis. Those who worship him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to.’”

This revelation came through Peter’s encounter with Cornelius, a Gentile army captain who feared God and gave generously to the poor. Though Cornelius was devout, Peter initially resisted the idea of ministering to him because of the deep-rooted Jewish-Gentile divide. But God interrupted Peter’s prejudice with a rebuke:
“Do not call anything unclean that I have made clean.” (Acts 10:15).

Here is the powerful lesson: God Himself tore down the wall of tribal and racial separation. Salvation was no longer limited to one tribe, race, or nation—it was for all who believe in Christ. If God does not discriminate, then neither should we. To reject someone based on tribe or race is to rebuild a wall that God Himself has already destroyed.

4. A Warning to Christians

Shockingly, some of the worst examples of tribalism and racism are found among Christians. Certain denominations rarely allow leaders from outside their founder’s tribe. Some Christian organizations practice silent discrimination in employment or promotions. Others look down on believers who don’t belong to their denomination.

This is a grievous sin. 1 Corinthians 12:13 declares: “All of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit.”

If Christ’s Spirit unites us into one body, then tribalism and racism tear apart the body of Christ. Anyone who persists in such discrimination is in danger of missing heaven itself.

Revelation 7:9 paints a different picture: “After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd—no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb.”

Heaven is multi-ethnic. If you reject people on tribal or racial grounds, how will you stand among the very crowd that God Himself has gathered?

5. Be Wise, But Don’t Prejudge

It’s true that some tribes and nations are known for certain negative behaviors. Scripture encourages us to be wise and discerning. But wisdom is not the same as prejudice. God never gave us permission to hate or mistreat someone just because of their background. Matthew 22:39 commands: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Your neighbor includes people of all colors, languages, tribes, and social classes. If this law of love were truly obeyed, ethnic cleansing and racial killings would vanish from our world.

6. The Devil’s Lie of Superiority

James 2:9 is blunt: “If you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the law condemns you as a lawbreaker.”

The idea that one race or tribe is superior to another is a satanic lie. It has fueled wars, genocides, slavery, and hatred. But believers must not fall into this trap. To dislike someone simply because of their race or ethnicity is to align yourself with the devil’s agenda, not God’s kingdom.

God Made All Tribes and Nations Equal
Acts 17:26 (NIV): “From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.”

God did not create tribes, races, or geographical locations so that they could compete against one another. He created them all equal, with dignity and the potential to flourish. If today one nation seems more advanced than another, it is not because God favored them or made them superior, but because of the principles they embraced and the effort they invested in their growth.

Africa is underdeveloped today not because God destined it for backwardness, but because many of its people live by principles that lead to stagnation rather than progress. Nations that apply God’s laws of diligence, integrity, unity, and justice inevitably rise, regardless of their race or location. The difference is not in color or tribe—it is in choices and obedience to truth.

God’s design was never for one race or tribe to boast over another, but for every nation to glorify Him in their own unique expressions and contributions to humanity.

7. Conclusion: Whose Kingdom Are You Serving?

Beloved, racism and tribalism are not “small sins.” They are direct attacks on God’s creation, His body, and His kingdom. Isaiah 45:9 warns that sorrow awaits those who fight against their Creator—and this includes anyone who despises people He made in His image.

If heaven welcomes people from every nation, tribe, and language, then God’s children on earth must do the same. You cannot claim to serve a God who accepts all while rejecting some.

The question is simple: Are you preparing for God’s kingdom of unity, or for the devil’s kingdom of division?

Choose love. Choose Christ. Choose unity.

A Final Prophetic Warning: God’s Curse on Perpetrators of Tribal and Racial Violence

Beloved, racism and tribalism are not just social issues—they are sins against God Himself. And to those who go beyond prejudice to sponsor or carry out tribal or racial killings, hear this:

Those who sponsor or carry out tribal or racial killings place themselves under God’s terrible judgment. The Word of God is clear:

  • Genesis 9:6 (NLT)“If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.”
👉 Every murder committed in the name of race or tribe is an assault on God’s image, and God Himself promises retribution.

  • Proverbs 6:16–17 (NLT)“There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent…”
👉 God detests the very hands that shed innocent blood in tribal or racial violence.

  • Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…”
👉 Woe rests upon leaders, politicians, or sponsors who fund bloodshed for selfish gain. Their end will be sorrow, disgrace, and destruction.

  • Psalm 11:5 (NIV)“The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.”
👉 Those who delight in killings are hated by God Himself, and His fierce wrath awaits them.

Prophetic Declaration

To everyone who fuels ethnic cleansing, civil wars, or genocides—whether by money, politics, propaganda, or weapons—hear the Word of the Lord:

  • May the sword you raise against your brother turn back against you (Psalm 7:15–16).

  • May the blood you shed cry out against you until justice overtakes you (Genesis 4:10).

  • May your generations reap the curses of innocent blood unless you repent (Exodus 20:5).

  • May your power, wealth, and influence rot away like Jezebel’s throne of lies (2 Kings 9:36–37).

  • May you be blotted out of the book of life if you refuse repentance (Revelation 20:15).

For it is written: “Cursed is anyone who kills his neighbor in secret” (Deuteronomy 27:24). Those who turn men into killing machines for tribal or racial hatred carry the curse of God both in this life and in eternity.

Repent now while it is still day; the night might be too late
