THE DIVINITY OF THE BIBLE

Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) are verbally inspired by God and are the revelation of God to humanity, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct. One of the foundations of Christianity is that the Bible is God's word. God has revealed truths about Himself and His purpose for creation in a medium that is easily accessible, which is a compilation of books.

Anchor Scriptures:

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instructions for right living.

  • 2 Peter 1:21 – For no prophetic message ever came just from human will, but people were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 – And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

What Does It Mean When We Say "The Bible Is God's Word"?

The Bible being God's word means it is divinely inspired and authoritative, written by humans who were under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit to communicate God's truth to humanity accurately.

  • Divine Inspiration: The human writers spoke from God, not by their own interpretation, because they were influenced by God's Spirit (the Holy Spirit).

  • Authority: Being divinely inspired by God makes the Bible authoritative, providing divine guidance for life. It is the highest truth and foundation for understanding God's message to humanity.

  • Human Authorship: It was written by about 40 authors of diverse origins, using their own unique styles, knowledge, and contexts.

  • Supernatural Authorship: Despite being written down by human authors, the overarching message comes from God, who used these human authors to articulate divine truth. Hence, this is called the God-through-Man authorship.

Christians' Basis for Believing in the Bible

1. Self-Testament

The Bible claims to be God's word. Even though Christians have not seen God, they believe that He is and that He is their Creator. This faith is also why they believe in the Bible based on its claim of being from God. Read the three anchor scriptures again to confirm this.

  • Proverbs 30:5-6 – Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His word, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

2. Jesus’ Testimony

Jesus Himself recognized the Old Testament as God's word and indicated that the New Testament would also be a source of divine revelation.

  • John 20:30-31 – Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.

Jesus believed the Old Testament was the word of God. He would often say, “It is written…” or ask, “Have you not read…?” He referred to Adam, Eve, Abel, Noah, Lot, Elijah, and Jonah as historical figures, and He said the Scriptures cannot be altered, abolished, broken, or pass away.

Jesus had the impression the Old Testament was all about Him! After the resurrection, He told His disciples:

  • Luke 24:44 – “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”

3. Unity and Consistency

The Bible’s consistent message and unity of subject matter across different authors and time periods are seen as evidence of its supernatural authorship.

False Claims About the Bible

Being that we are in the last days, men are now saying that the Bible was written by man’s wisdom. It is true the Bible was written by men but not by the wisdom of men—rather, by the divinely inspired wisdom of God.

The claim that the King James family wrote the Bible is false. King James I commissioned an English translation of the Bible, known as the King James Version (KJV), to resolve religious differences and assert his authority, with the first publication done in 1611.

This was produced by a committee of 54 scholars and translators sponsored by King James I in the early 17th century—not by the royal family itself.

The King James Bible was a product of the early 17th century, aiming to be the standard English Bible for the Church of England.

Every word in the Bible was written by men under the divine inspiration of God—not King James. And the reason why He gave us His word is for us to be taught about His truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instructions for right living.

The Bible is not a product of human invention but is God’s truthful and precise communication to humanity. And because it is God-birthed, it carries divine authority and is trustworthy to guide every man into the righteousness of God.

If the Bible were not God-inspired, then we wouldn’t need the Holy Spirit for scripture interpretation—because only He can truly tell us what each and every scripture means, since it is His word.

Things to Know About God’s Word (The Bible)

1. God’s Word is Relational (His Dictionary to Humanity)

There is no aspect of human life that is not covered in the Bible. It covers all affairs of man—from how to treat strangers and orphans, to how to pray, give, hear God, relate with your neighbour, go about your trade, etc. All these examples have scriptures that talk about them. So God is closer to man than we think; He is not far.

The Bible is God’s dictionary to mankind. It is the book you consult when you want to know and understand God's relationship with humanity, just as the English dictionary is to the use of the English language.

In it are all of God’s vocabularies such as righteousness, holiness, Trinity, salvation, repentance, forgiveness, eternal life, etc. These words can’t be fully understood unless we consult the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit for true interpretation. This makes the Bible a spiritual tool for teaching and learning God’s ways, as stated by 2 Timothy 3:16.

2. God’s Word is Powerful

Have you ever wondered how just speaking a statement from the Bible concerning a negative situation causes that situation to give way? Like telling a headache to go—and it stops? Isn’t this enough proof that the Bible is God’s word spoken and written through men?

The word of God is living in the Person of Jesus.

  • Hebrews 4:12 – The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts all the way through, to where soul and spirit meet, to where joints and marrow come together…

There is no textbook or human-authored book in this world that is as powerful to do supernatural things as the Bible. This is why Satan and his agents will always run when the word of God is released against them.

  • Jeremiah 23:29 – “Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?”

This scripture is a declaration by God, emphasizing the inherent power and authority of His divine message. The word of God is not a passive instrument; it actively works to bring about change and transformation in people’s lives. This power is not something that can be hindered; it is an unstoppable force used by God to bring about His will.

3. God’s Word is Reliable – It Never Fails

God’s word can never fail in the hands of anyone who is right with God, clings to it (believes in it), and acts on the word in the right manner (faith). That is, God’s word can’t fail in the hands of a righteous man who believes in it and has faith for it also.

Because the Bible was divinely inspired by God, you don’t need to question its reliability—since God is reliable.

This is why scriptures on healing can heal a sick person.

  • Isaiah 55:11 – So is my word that goes out of my mouth; it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Whenever the Bible speaks, it is God speaking.

If the Scriptures are the revelation of God to humanity, then every event in the Bible is not a mere story of the past, but is His word to us today also—because it is living and active.

  • Hebrews 4:12a – The word of God is alive and active…

  • John 1:4 – The Word was the source of life, and this brought light to humanity.

The Holy Spirit who inspired the minds of the authors of the Bible is the one still speaking through the Bible to us today and gives us its accurate interpretations, confirming all that the authors wrote through Him (John 14:26, John 16:13).

All of God’s commandments in the Bible to Israel and other nations are the same commandments of Him to us today. Every punishment He promised to mete out on those who do wickedness, serve other gods, etc., are still the same punishments He will mete out to those doing them today.

All the blessings He promised Israel as a nation if they diligently serve and obey Him—same applies to every nation and individual today. Same as every prophecy He gave to Israel—He is still prophesying to us today.

Jesus is the Living Word of God

  • John 1:1 – In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Jesus is the living Word of God.

  • John 1:14 – The Word became a human being, full of grace and truth, and lived among us.

Jesus is the Word, and Jesus is God Himself.

  • John 1:18 – No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is the same as God and is at the Father's side, He has made Him known.

To prove that Jesus is the living Word of God, read:

  • John 1:3 – Through Him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without Him.

In the above verse, the Word of God is represented with a masculine pronoun (Him), which shows the Word is Jesus.

  • John 1:10 – The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.

This refers to the existence of Jesus in the world when He came to fulfil His mission of salvation for mankind. Jesus is the living Word of God who dwelt among men and now sits at the right hand of God. This proves the Word is living, because Jesus is alive in heaven.

Conclusion

The Bible is not just an ancient text; it is the living, breathing Word of God — alive in the person of Jesus Christ. It carries divine power, authority, and truth. No other book reveals the heart of God like the Bible. It is the only spiritual document that leads to eternal life through faith in Jesus. Whether believed or not, its truth is unchanging and eternal.

No other book has power like Him. Any other book that claims to be the way to God that is not the Bible is deception. Even though they may contain morals, they don’t have the life of Jesus in them.
