Hearing and Following God’s Voice

John 10:1–5

Every true child of God is designed to hear His voice and follow His leading. It is the person who is been lead by God that will not lack. (Psalms 23:1). This scripture is strictly for those who allow God to lead them and follow His leading. Whenever God leads His own, He always goes ahead of them on the path He is leading them.

Jesus warns us in John 10:1 that anyone who tries to enter the sheepfold through the backdoor instead of the gate is a thief and a robber. The gate is Jesus Himself, the only legal way to God. Any other way is the path of deception.

False prophets are a good example. Many of them once knew God, but along the line the enemy deceived them to serve Jesus through the “backdoor”—ways God calls sinful and offensive. That is how true prophets turn into false prophets.

Jesus Is the Only Way

It is only evil people who insist on sneaking through the backdoor when the front door is open. Jesus makes it clear that He is the only legal and true way to God (John 10:7–9). Any other way, no matter how spiritual it sounds, is the path of a thief and robber.

Hearing God’s Voice

Just as children can recognize the voice of their parents—even while sleeping—so every believer is expected to recognize God’s voice. If this is not happening, something is wrong in the believer’s fellowship with God.

Hearing God clearly is not automatic; it comes through practice and consistency. Mature believers who easily discern His voice have spent years building intimacy with Him. This comes through maintaining an altar of fellowship—a lifestyle of prayer, worship, and the Word.

Genesis 22:4 shows Abraham worshipping before obeying God. Worship builds intimacy with God and makes it easy to hear His leading.

The Importance of Fellowship

Psychology shows us that frequent communication between parents and children helps the child master the parents’ voice. In the same way, without constant fellowship with God, His voice will remain unfamiliar. Sporadic visits to God will not build intimacy.

Ways to build fellowship include:

  • Prayer, especially praying in tongues

  • Studying and meditating on His Word

  • Praise and worship

As you consistently practice these, His voice becomes clearer and easier to discern.

Why Many Believers Struggle to Hear God

The problem is never with God but with us. He speaks, but many cannot recognize His voice. Even long fasts will not help if there is no foundation of daily fellowship and obedience.

James 4:8 reminds us: “Draw near to me and I will draw near to you.” The closer you walk with God, the more naturally He shares His secrets with you.

Think of Abraham, God’s friend. When God told him to sacrifice Isaac, he did not bind the devil or call for confirmation. He already knew God’s voice. And when God stopped him from killing Isaac, Abraham immediately recognized the voice.

The Role of Obedience

Hearing God is not just about recognition—it is also about obedience. God gives further instructions only when we have obeyed the previous ones. Abraham obeyed God’s initial instruction to sacrifice Isaac, and in his obedience, God revealed the ram in the thicket (Genesis 22:1–16).

Without obedience, divine direction is hindered. Fasting and praying without a heart of obedience will still result in silence from heaven.

The Voice of Strangers

John 10:5 says, “They will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

Any voice that contradicts God’s Word is the voice of a stranger. Sometimes the devil may even quote Scripture, just as he did when tempting Jesus. But the Spirit and the Word will always expose falsehood.

This is why personal knowledge of God’s Word is non-negotiable. Without it, even Scripture can be twisted to deceive.

Words of Rhema

  • Hearing God personally is greater than receiving prophecy from others.

  • Intimacy with God makes His voice natural and constant.

  • Obedience unlocks further direction.

  • Friendship with God shortens the distance—what takes others 40 days of fasting, a friend of God may hear while reading the Word or even eating.

Final Challenge

Many believers miss blessings—sometimes generational blessings—because they could not hear or discern God’s voice. Abraham’s obedience to God’s voice birthed generational blessings. What blessings might you and I have missed by ignoring or not recognizing His leading?

Ask God today for the grace to hear, recognize, and obey His voice. Pursue intimacy, not distance. Become His close friend, not a casual acquaintance.

Key Takeaway:
Divine direction flows from intimacy and obedience. Build an altar of fellowship, practice His presence, obey His Word—and you will never miss His leading.
