Introduction
Many Christians live under the shadow of doubt about their salvation. The devil exploits this ignorance, making believers question whether they are truly saved. As a result, some respond to altar calls over and over again—not because God has not saved them, but because they lack the assurance of what salvation truly means.
This insecurity robs them of peace, joy, and the inheritance that belongs to them in Christ. Some even fear that their past sins were too big for God to forgive, so they keep confessing them daily. But God wants every believer to know and enjoy the reality of salvation without fear.
What Does Assurance of Salvation Mean?
Assurance of salvation means freedom from the doubt that we are still sinners. Assurance of salvation is the confidence you have that you are truly saved in Christ no matter what the devil might tell you or what happens around you, and the peace that follows this confidence in your heart.
What Is the Confidence That I Am Truly Saved?
By taking these scriptures to heart, you can have no doubt about the reality of your eternal salvation:
John 3:16 – For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.
You—everyone who believes that Jesus died for their sins and confesses Him as Lord and Saviour—will be saved. So this should let you know that the moment you give your life to Christ, you are already saved. I know you might still be struggling to do away with some sins and lifestyles, but don’t let that weigh you down or discredit your salvation.
Why Believers Still Struggle With Sin
Even the Apostle Paul admitted this struggle:
Romans 7:18–20 – “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out... I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.”
When you are born again, Christ’s righteousness comes into you. But the old nature of sin will try to regain control. This explains the inner battle many believers face.
Jesus warned about this in Luke 11:24–26, teaching that when a heart is cleansed but not filled with God’s Spirit, evil forces can return stronger. That’s why nurturing your new life in Christ through fellowship, prayer, and the Word is essential.
Luke 11:24–26 – When an evil spirit goes out of a person, it travels over dry country looking for a place to rest. If it can’t find one, it says to itself, “I will go back to my house.” (25) So it goes back and finds the house clean and tidy. (26) Then it goes out and brings seven other spirits even worse than itself, and they come and live there. So when it is all over, that person is in a worse state than he was at the beginning.
When a man gives his life to Jesus and refuses to nurture the righteous nature of Christ given to him at salvation, it makes his spirit empty and open for the spirit of sin that has been expelled to find its way back with a stronger force. This time it is very difficult for such a one to break free from sin.
This spirit of sin is coming back into the life of someone who has been swept clean, put in order, and purified by the blood of Jesus, and then re-pollutes it with all manner of sinful spirits. This is exactly what causes believers to backslide into sin, and it shows the danger of not intentionally living in or enforcing the righteousness of God in your life after salvation.
The spirit of sin is extremely persistent, just like demonic spirits. This parable serves as a warning about the dangers of being born again without lasting, positive internal transformation and filling by the Holy Spirit.
Other Scriptures That Give Us Confidence of Salvation
-
John 5:24 – Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my words and believes in Him who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged but have already passed from death to life.
-
1 John 5:12 – Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
-
Hebrews 10:12 – Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective forever, and then sat down at the right-hand side of God.
-
Ephesians 1:7–8 – In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace (8) that He lavished on us.
God does not want you to live in doubt of your salvation. Instead, He wants you to know that you have eternal life based on the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Look at this one more scripture assuring us of our salvation in Christ Jesus:
Colossians 1:12–14 – And giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light. (13) For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Final Assurance – The Witness of the Spirit
Having said all these things, there is one other striking scripture that should put an end to doubt about the assurance of our salvation:
Romans 8:14–16 – Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children. (15) For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, “Father! My Father!” (16) God’s Spirit joins Himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children.
There is a peace and confidence you just have that you are truly saved after being born again. This is not from you but from the Holy Spirit. His work in us is to create evidence that we are His children.
One evidence is being led by Him (verse 14). Being led by the Holy Spirit means walking by His direction and living by His instructions.
Another evidence is producing His fruit in us, making our lives bearers of these fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, and kindness, as seen in Galatians 5:22–23.
Another way this evidence manifests is when we depend on God solely as our Father and source. When we rise up to say to Him, “You are my Saviour, Master, Lord, my provider, healer, guide, counsellor, and so on,” it shows we have been adopted by Him as sons. When there arises in a believer’s heart a humble, dependent, thankful, praiseful spirit toward Him, that is proof you are saved.
A person who is without Christ cannot call out to God in a dependent, loving, praiseful, and thankful manner. The world believes they don’t need God in any way. They are self-dependent and even call those who depend on Jesus fools or lazy.
Final Word
From today, whenever the devil questions you about the authenticity of your salvation, hold on to and remind him of these truths, and he will flee from you.
