WHAT IS SIN?

Sin is any act that contradicts God's laws, thereby separating man from God and leading to eternal destruction if man does not reconcile back to God by following His laws.

📖 1 John 3:4 "Sin is the transgression of the law."
Transgression is the same as contradiction (to go against). To sin is to transgress or break God's laws.

📖 Romans 6:23"For sin pays its wage—death; but God's free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord."

These two scriptures summarize the definition of sin above.

What is the Origin of Sin?

📖 Romans 5:12"Sin came into the world through one man, and his sin brought death with it. As a result, death has spread to the whole human race because everyone has sinned."

📖 Romans 5:14 "But from the time of Adam to the time of Moses death ruled over the whole human race, even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam did when he disobeyed God's command."

The scripture above is the reason why generational curses are real. The first humans on earth (Adam & Eve) sinned against God, and He cursed them for disobedience. That curse did not end with them but kept flowing from generation to generation, thus making everyone born into this world a sinner by default — not because man personally sinned first, but because Adam and Eve, the first parents of all humanity (Genesis 3:20 — "Adam named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all human beings"), passed it down to all their descendants.

The only way to break this curse is to accept Jesus as one's Lord and Saviour. While preparing this message, something struck my heart strongly: If the curse God laid on Adam and Eve could flow from one generation to another generation of mankind, making every man a sinner by default, then generational curses are real. And if the only way to break free from this generational curse is by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, then every generational curse must be intentionally broken before such a person can be set free — whether a believer or not.

Do not joke with generational curses — they are real.

The Nature of Sin and Man

Sin is innate in man because it is an inherited nature, just as every generational curse is innate to its carrier. That is why the Bible says, “The heart of man is desperately wicked.” No one teaches a child to lie or steal, yet they do it — and they know it is wrong.

Romans 7:14–18 describes the sinful nature:

  • The law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

  • I do not understand what I do; for I do not do what I want to do, but what I hate.

  • This shows the law is right, but sin living in me makes me do it.

  • Though the desire to do good is present, I am not able to carry it out.

The only way to break free from this sinful nature is by surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Works of charity and philanthropy are good, but they cannot make you right with God or earn you salvation.

It is true you will reap blessings for giving here on earth, because the law of sowing and reaping works for both Christians and non-Christians. But unless you are saved, no treasure will be stored for you in heaven because you do not belong to God.

Romans 8:8 — "Those who obey their human nature cannot please God."

It is only through accepting and confessing Jesus as Lord and Saviour that you are saved and given the Holy Spirit as a mark of God’s ownership over you to be able to please God.

Romans 8:9b — "Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him."

Romans 5:5 — The Holy Spirit is given to us when we are born again.

Note: This is not the same as baptism in the Holy Spirit. At salvation, the Holy Spirit is given as a gift to everyone who believes to be saved, but at Holy Spirit baptism, His Pentecostal power is activated in you.

The Holy Spirit empowers your mortal body to live the life of Christ, which is your reasonable sacrifice to God.

Romans 8:11 — "If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from death, lives in you, then he who raised Christ from death will also give life to your mortal bodies by the presence of His Spirit in you."

This is the reason why no man can please God by human efforts, many have tried it but ended up sinning against God the more. Without the Holy Spirit in a man he can't please God. He is the enforcer of the life of God's righteous nature in a born again believer.

What are the Consequences of Sin?

Romans 6:23 — "For sin pays its wage—death; but God's free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord."

Spiritual Consequences

  • Spiritual death and eternal separation from God — This is the foremost and greatest consequence of sin for the unrepentant sinner. Sin creates a vacuum between God and man, leading to the absence of God’s presence in a person’s life. This is why good works cannot establish a relationship with God without accepting Jesus.

  • Satanic Bondage: Indulging in certain sins opens individuals up to further demonic influence, making them more susceptible to bondage. For instance, the sin of pornography opens up an individual to demonic influences like masturbation and other forms of sexual immoralities and sexual perversions like anal and oral sex, gay, lesbianism and bestiality. Most people who are involved in this usually finds it hard to stop it. Even when they don't want to do it again, they find themselves doing it uncontrollably, making it an addiction.

Physical Consequences

  • Suffering and pain — God did not originally create woman to suffer during pregnancy and childbirth, but this became a reality after the sin of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:16).

  • Financial hardship — Sin also brought hardship to mankind (Genesis 3:17–18). Man has to toil very hard before he can feed his family. The primary reason people go to work every morning is first because of food, before anything else. It wasn't so in God's plan for man.

  • Physical death — Sin results in sickness, diseases, and physical death. The Bible records how God destroyed individuals, cities, and nations for their unrepentant sinful lives:

    • Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18–19)

    • The generation of Noah (Genesis 6:9–14; 7:1–23)

    • Pharaoh and his men (Exodus 14:5–29)

    • Eli and his household (1 Samuel 3:12–18; 4:12–22)

    • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1–11)

God didn't create man to die physical death. In fact, there was nothing called death in God's destiny for man, but the moment man sinned against God, sin was introduced.

Christ’s Work — Reconciliation and Freedom

Christ’s work of reconciliation was first to restore eternal life, which Satan stole through sin, and then to annul the curses that followed the Fall. Accepting Jesus reconciles us to God, but that alone is not enough to break curses — you must also apply God’s laws and principles to cancel those curses placed on Adam and Eve such as curse of financial poverty.

Romans 5:18–19"So then, as the one sin condemned all people, in the same way the one righteous act sets all people free and gives them life. And just as the mass of people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way the mass of people will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man."

Never give yourself for wicked and sinful purposes (Romans 6:13), because if you do, you become a slave to sin.

The Word of God — The Only Instrument to Save the Sinner

Only the Word of God has the power to save sinners. God’s Word reveals His righteousness through faith. It is the only instrument by which sinners are convicted, saved, and made right with God. In His Word lies His saving power, which is why the gospel must be preached. Therefore those who hear and believe the message of salvation are saved, because the Holy Spirit convicts them to believe.

Romans 1:16 — "I have complete confidence in the gospel; it is God’s power to save all who believe, first the Jews and also the Gentiles."

Romans 1:17a — "For the gospel reveals how God puts people right with himself: it is through faith from beginning to end."

The first kind of faith every sinner must have is faith for salvation. Every true believer is a man of faith, because salvation itself is by faith, even if that faith has not yet extended to other aspects of life like healing, provision etc.

Therefore, do not turn your ears away from the gospel. Every sinner is a carrier of God’s anger, which is why we should not intentionally live sinful lives.

Does Salvation Automatically Break Generational Curses?

Adam’s disobedience opened the door for sin, and with it came death and curses. This explains the reality of generational curses: the sin of one man (Adam) affected all humanity.

Some point to 2 Corinthians 5:17 — “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” — By this scripture, many think that automatically once you accept Christ, all ancestral curses are broken. Such assumption is too simplistic.

Ask yourself: when a man is born again, does he instantly reflect all the attitudes of Christ? The answer is no. Change is gradual and requires deliberate effort to put away the old ways of life before reaching maturity in Christ. The same applies to generational curses. Salvation does not automatically break them; rather, it qualifies you to be set free in a Godly way. It gives you both the authority and the pathway to walk in, so that you can experience complete deliverance from entrenched generational patterns.

Final Exhortation & Practical Warning

Through one man (Adam), all became sinners. Through one man (Jesus Christ), salvation came to all who believe (Romans 5:18–19).

  • Do not yield yourself to wicked and sinful purposes (Romans 6:13); if you do, you become a slave to sin.

  • Transformation is real but progressive — accept Christ, rely on the Holy Spirit, apply God’s Word daily, and take deliberate steps to break generational and habitual strongholds.

  • Good works and charity are valuable and will be rewarded in this life, but they do not replace salvation; only Jesus can reconcile you to God and secure your place in His kingdom.
