Jesus: The Gateway To Divinity
What is Power?
Power is the ability to do something — the strength, capacity, or force that enables action. In spiritual terms, it is the strength of God working through a believer to confront and overcome the works of darkness, or the strength of the devil working through his agents to attack the children of God.
What is Authority?
Authority is the legal right, backing, or permission to use power legitimately. It is the divine mandate given by God to rule, to legislate, and to command. Authority is superior to power, because power without authority is illegitimate.
What's The Difference Between Power And Authority
- A soldier in uniform carrying a gun has both power and authority. The gun represents power (the ability to act with force), while the uniform represents authority (the legal right given by the government or state to use that power). His actions are backed by law and recognized as legitimate.
-
A terrorist carrying a gun has power but no authority. He possesses the weapon (power) but lacks the legal or rightful mandate to use it. His power is illegitimate, unlawful, and ultimately subject to being overruled by true authority.
👉 In the same way, the devil displays power to steal, kill, destroy, oppress, intimidate, afflict, and more, but his power is illegitimate before the throne of God and subject to the power and authority of Christ Jesus. Believers in Christ, however, carry both legitimate power and authority in His name — and authority always outranks raw power. This is why, at the mention of the name of Jesus, Satan must bow, for he is an illegal being. Let's dive deeper into this truth with some scriptures below.
The Scriptural Foundation of Believer’s Authority
Matthew 16:19 — “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”
Isaiah 22:22 — “I will give him complete authority under the king, the descendant of David. He will have the keys of office; what he opens, no one will shut, and what he shuts, no one will open.”
Believers have both authority and power under the kingship of Jesus. He is the Head of the Church, and through faith, we are Abraham’s descendants and members of Christ’s body. This gives us the keys of authority — the right to bind and forbid anything on earth so that no force of darkness can undo it, and the right to permit God’s will so that no power of hell can resist it.
Whatever you permit in your life is what heaven releases, and whatever you forbid is what heaven forbids. Based on this understanding, you can decree victory over every area where you’ve suffered defeat. Stand on Matthew 16:19 and boldly declare an end to unwanted circumstances.
📌 For instance:
-
Forbid insufficiency and lack.
-
Permit abundance according to 2 Corinthians 9:8: “And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause.”
A closed mouth means a closed destiny. Your mouth is your weapon of war. It is your gun; your words are the bullets; and when God’s Word fills your declaration, it becomes explosive gunpowder that no demon can resist. This is why prayerless believers easily become prey to the devil.
Authority Over Cities and Nations
Matthew 16:19 and Isaiah 22:22 also point to a broader dimension: believers are given authority not just over personal issues, but also over their towns, cities, nations, and even the world.
When insecurity, immorality, or violence threatens a nation, believers carry the authority of heaven to decree peace and restoration. But remember Daniel 10:11–21 — the “Prince of Persia,” a fallen angel, resisted angelic messengers. This shows that every city, nation, and region has spiritual princes (fallen angels) trying to influence events — sponsoring immorality, crime, violence, war, and destruction.
Yet despite these forces, believers carry the final authority in Christ. When we rise in prayer, using the name of Jesus, territorial spirits bow because the authority of Jesus is the highest law in the universe.
How Knowledge and Truth Make Christians Spiritually Powerful
Christ Above All Powers
Colossians 1:15–16 reminds us that all powers, rulers, and authorities — even satanic ones — were originally created through Christ. They cannot be greater than their Creator. Thus, no power or authority can ever surpass Christ, and this same authority is shared with us as believers.
Colossians 1:15-16--Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the firstborn Son, superior to all created things. (16)..For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, Lords, rulers and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him.
Through Christ, principalities and powers, rulers, lords and authorities were created until some rebelled against God and became satanic powers as seen in verse 16. Having known this fact, can a servant be greater than the master? Or a clay be greater than the potter? The answers to these two questions is no. So therefore there is no power and authority greater than Jesus and this is same authority and power every believer possess according to Ephesians 1:19-20 we read above.
Luke 10:19 — “Listen! I have given you authority, so that you can walk on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you.”
This verse outlines three distinct authorities given to believers:
-
Authority over satanic wisdom (the serpent’s deception and lies).
-
Authority over all powers of darkness (witchcraft, occult, marine, celestial).
-
Authority for unbroken divine protection.

Conclusion
Believers carry divine power, but more importantly, they have divine authority — the legal right to legislate heaven’s will on earth. Recognize it. Use it. Speak it. Your mouth, filled with God’s Word, is your weapon of victory. Don’t keep silent — decree God’s promises, forbid the devil’s works, and watch heaven enforce your declarations.
