Real-Life Story: Anita’s Awakening

Anita had just turned 34 when the doctor, without much ceremony, dropped the bomb:
"You have multiple fibroids, and they may be affecting your ability to conceive."

She sat still, blinking rapidly as her husband’s grip tightened on her hand. She’d never felt sick, never missed her period, never thought anything was wrong. But here she was—two years into marriage, with no baby and a uterus that seemed to be telling a different story.

That night, Anita cried—not just from confusion, but from a sense of betrayal.
"Why didn’t anyone talk about this? Why didn’t the church ever mention fibroids?"

If you’ve ever been where Anita is, or know someone who has, this series is for you.

Why So Many Women Suffer in Silence

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumours that grow in or around the womb. Shocking as it may sound, studies show that up to 80% of Black women and 70% of all women globally will develop fibroids by age 50.

Yet, it remains a hushed topic, especially in Christian and African communities.

Here’s why this is a growing concern:

  • Many women discover fibroids only when they struggle to conceive.

  • Some experience heavy bleeding, bloating, pelvic pain — and still don’t know the cause.

  • Others are misdiagnosed, ignored, or told to just “believe God” without proper information.

And yes — fibroids can cause infertility. They can block the fallopian tubes, distort the uterus, affect implantation, and even increase the risk of miscarriage.

What God and Real Experience Reveal

The Bible says in Hosea 4:6:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

God is not against medicine. In fact, He has provided wisdom, natural remedies, and even modern tools to help women walk in healing. Faith does not deny facts — it builds upon them.

Anita’s journey taught her this: you can combine faith, wisdom, and lifestyle changes to fight fibroids naturally and protect your fertility.

What You Need to Know About Fibroids (in Simple Terms)

🔸 What are fibroids, exactly?

In simple terms, fibroids are non-cancerous growths (lumps or harmless tumors) that form in or around the uterus, made of muscle and connective tissues that aren’t dangerous and don’t spread to other parts, unlike cancer. They’re quite common, especially in women of reproductive age, and can vary in size from tiny to large enough to change the shape of the uterus. Some women don’t even notice them, while others may experience heavy periods, pelvic pain, or fertility issues.

🔸 What causes them?

While the exact cause isn't fully known, key triggers include:

  • Hormonal imbalance, especially too much estrogen (Estrogen is a natural chemical in the body called a hormone. In simple terms, estrogen is what helps girls grow into women. It’s responsible for things like starting periods, growing breasts, and making hips wider. It also helps keep bones strong, skin smooth, and even affects mood and energy. Although it’s mostly known as a “female hormone,” everyone has some estrogen—just in different amounts. It plays a role in both women’s and men’s health).

  • Genetic predisposition (family history): Now, when we talk about “genetic predisposition” to fibroids, we mean that your genes—what you inherit from your family—can increase your chances of developing them. If your mother, sister, or grandmother had fibroids, your risk is higher too. In fact, studies show that women with a family history of fibroids are about three times more likely to develop them.

  • Scientists have even found specific genes and mutations that are more common in women with fibroids. These genes can affect how cells grow and respond to hormones like estrogen, which plays a big role in fibroid development. Read more

So, while lifestyle and hormones matter, your DNA can quietly tip the scales

  • Poor diet, especially foods high in processed fats and sugar. Foods to limit or avoid:

    • Red and processed meats: Linked to higher fibroid risk.
    • High-sugar and refined carbs: Can spike insulin and estrogen levels.
    • Alcohol and caffeine: May disrupt hormone balance and worsen symptoms.

  • Stress, which impacts hormone regulation; Chronic stress can throw your hormones out of balance, especially by increasing cortisol, which may indirectly boost estrogen — the hormone that fuels fibroid growth. Stress also contributes to weight gain and inflammation, both of which can worsen fibroid symptoms.

  • Environmental toxins: Yes, environmental toxins—especially certain chemicals found in plastics and personal care products—have been linked to the growth of fibroids.

The main culprits are phthalates, which are used to make plastics flexible and are found in things like food packaging, cosmetics, shampoos, and even medical supplies. These chemicals are known as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with your body’s hormone system—particularly estrogen, which plays a big role in fibroid growth. Recent studies have shown that:

    • Women with higher levels of phthalates in their bodies are more likely to have fibroids.
    • These chemicals can make fibroid cells grow faster and live longer by activating certain hormone-sensitive pathways.
    • The risk may be even higher if the fibroid cells already have certain genetic mutations.

In short, these everyday chemicals can act like fuel for fibroids—especially when combined with other risk factors like genetics or hormone imbalances. Read more
